10 Essential Tips for Brides: Wedding Videography

Planning your dream wedding in Cornwall is an exhilarating journey, filled with beautiful venues, scenic landscapes, and countless details to consider. One crucial element of capturing your special day is hiring a talented wedding videographer. I always tell any couple who enquires with me that wedding videography is not to be missed, and even if I am not lucky enough to have their date free, they should find the right videographer for them still. To ensure your wedding videography experience is seamless and stress-free, here are ten essential tips to think about:

1. Choose the Right Videographer

Selecting a videographer who resonates with your vision is the first step. Look for someone with experience filming in Cornwall, who understands the unique beauty of working in this landscape and across the coast. Review their portfolio to ensure their style aligns with your preferences, whether it’s cinematic storytelling or documentary-style videos. Your videographer should make you comfortable and work with you to ensure your day is captured how you want it. I always do this with my couples.

2. Communicate Your Vision

Clearly articulate your vision to your videographer. Share your preferred video style, whether it’s a cinematic film with drone footage of Cornwall’s coastlines or a short-form highlight reel perfect for social media. Discuss any specific moments or details you want to be captured, every tiny detail that will make your edited videos even more special. I always look for these moments and also ensure I cover the vows, speeches, first dance, and candid interactions (amongst many other things!).

3. Plan a Site Visit

If possible, make sure that your videographer arranges a site visit to your chosen venue. This allows them to familiarise themselves with the layout, lighting, and best spots for capturing stunning shots. The best venues make it effortless for your suppliers to do their jobs, you can read more about it here.

4. Consider the Weather

Cornwall’s weather can be unpredictable, so have a backup plan for outdoor shots. Discuss alternative indoor locations with your videographer in case of rain. I am no stranger to filming in the rain, and often I find this brings some of the best fun. If you embrace your day in all it’s glory, you’ll have an amazing time, whatever the weather! Whilst we do love sunshine on our big day, the real winner is actually slightly overcast. This is because the light is more flattering and softer, plus you and your guests won’t be squinting in all your footage and photos, or sweating too much!

5. Create a Timeline

Work with your videographer to create a detailed timeline for the wedding day. This helps ensure they capture all the essential moments without rushing. Allocate time for getting ready shots, the ceremony, reception, and special moments like sunset shots at scenic locations. I give all my couples a questionnaire to fill in, so they can give me all the information that I need, making sure I work to their plans.

6. Coordinate with Other Vendors

Ensure your videographer coordinates with your photographer, planner, and other vendors. This collaboration helps avoid any logistical issues and ensures everyone is on the same page. Friendly and experienced staff at venues really help at facilitating smooth communication.

7. Prioritise Natural Moments

While posed shots are essential, prioritise natural, candid moments. These genuine interactions and emotions create the most memorable and heartfelt footage. Encourage your videographer is able to capture the laughter, tears, and spontaneous joy that make your day unique.

8. Embrace the Golden Hour

The golden hour, shortly before sunset, offers the most flattering natural light for your wedding video. Plan your schedule to include time for golden hour shots, especially if your venue has stunning outdoor spaces. The rolling hills and coastlines of Cornwall look particularly magical during this time. It is always a strike of luck if you have a sunset on your wedding day, and my advice is always: get some beautiful shots!

9. Be Yourself

Authenticity is key to a beautiful wedding film. Be yourself and let your personality shine through. I have experience working across many different forms of video, from fashion to documentary. I can help you if you need direction or advice, but ultimately you should just be yourself and mostly ignore me and my camera. The interactions you have with your family and friends are genuine moments that make your wedding video truly special.

10. Trust Your Videographer

Finally, trust your videographer’s expertise. They know how to capture the best shots and tell your story beautifully. Relax and enjoy your day, knowing you’re in capable hands.

Conclusion

Working seamlessly with your wedding videographer ensures that your special day is captured in the most beautiful and meaningful way. By choosing the right videographer, communicating your vision, and embracing the natural beauty of Cornwall, you’ll create a wedding film that you’ll cherish forever. Oh, and I might have missed just one final point to the list: HAVE FUN!
